In the Southern Cameroons much like anywhere else in the world they have competitive sporting events. Most of the time these events are played as a friendly competition. In the area, team sports have been more developed over time than any other sport besides the often solo racing.One of the most popular organized team sports is football, or what some around the world would call soccer. There are two main divisions of the soccer that is played in the Southern Cameroons. The most superior of the two divisions is named the elite division. This division contains the fewest teams but they are nonetheless just as competitive. In the second division levels there are a numerous amount of teams all playing each other to get to somewhat of a championship. One team from the southern state will ultimately compete against the winner of all of the second division teams of the northern states.
The Buea Mountain race is one of the main sporting events in the Southern Cameroons. This event has even drawn worldwide attention. In fact it is said that runners travel from all around the world in order to run up and down the Buea Mountain which is deemed the tallest mountain in all of West Africa. Although the residents of the Southern Cameroons may be the most used to running this mountain terrain they do not always win. Runners that participate in this race from the Southern Cameroons have even gone on to run other races around the world in Europe as well as Australia.
There are various other things that may not be as organized as the Buea Mountain Race or the soccer teams. These include the typical school sports, canoe racing and swimming as well as horse racing. Sports although competitive are used as a social activity. Much respect goes to those whole participate in the events in the Southern Cameroons.
