MY FRIENDS FARM
At the end of this month I'm going to be visiting my friend who lives on a farm! I'm really excited about it. When I was a kid and my parents would go on road trips we'd drive through these country towns and I was always curious what it would be like to live and work on a farm. If my friend hadn't gone bankrupt this experience never would've happened. He and his wife were pretty miserable living in the city. They were used to growing up in more rural areas and when they came to live in the city a few years ago I don't think they really knew what to do with themselves. On the surface it seemed like they were pretty happy. He had the expensive car and the luxury apartment but I think their financial situation reflected their unhappiness. I didn't realize they were wallowing in as much debt as they were to keep the illusion of success going. I remember we all went out to eat at a fancy restaurant and they said that we should all really enjoy this dinner because it's going to be one of the last ones. Then they opened up about everything. My friend has been writing me some letters and we stay in touch by phone so he can tell me about the things he'll be selling at the farmer's markets. I can tell they're much happier now. I'm excited to see how they've adapted to their new life!
