MOVING TO IRELAND
A few years ago, I was seriously considering just moving to Ireland and starting over there. I had only a few thousand dollars to my name, a cell phone, my phone case, and a closet full of clothing. One of my aunts lives in Limerick and I had already stayed with her during one summer so I thought I might be able to board with her until I got on my feet. I thought I had no friends here in the States and I wasn’t getting anywhere in my job hunt. The only thing that stopped me from making the move was the fact that I didn’t have any idea how to get a job in Ireland either. I had no contacts and didn’t know how to get a work visa. It’d probably be easy just to start construction work somewhere or do a trade, but I had no training in any of that. Any place of employment would probably have to pay me in straight cash and I don’t know how they feel about that sort of thing in Ireland. I certainly couldn’t have lived off of my aunt. She’s retired and lives off the dole, which is the Irish version of welfare or a retirement fund.
