Southern Cameroons History

Before the year 1919, the land which is now known as the Cameroons was named Kamerun. It formed part of the territory of Germany until Britain won it after its victory in World War I. From then on the land was separated into the Southern and Northern Cameroons, falling under the administration of Britain.

In the following decades the United Nations Organization was the one to decide the faith of the territory, allowing the Northern and Southern Cameroons to become a part of Nigeria. The British still made decisions regarding the regions, even though they had officially become part of Nigeria.

The result of this integration led to the Cameroons to develop as nations of their own. The Northern Cameroons desired union with Nigeria, while the Southern Cameroonians wanted nothing less than independence which was granted to them.

In 1962 the independent Southern Cameroon united with La Republique du Cameroun to form a brand new country which went on to carry the name: Federal Republic of Cameroon.
