Government

In the past the Southern Cameroons government was influenced by many different places. Over time governmental structures were put into place and then restructured time and time again. Through this process the people of the Southern Cameroons now have the government that is in place today.

In the earliest structure of the Southern Cameroons government it was structured by the British administration influence. The area was governed and grouped together by this structure as part of Nigeria. The approach of mirroring the two was to divide the area into different districts. These districts were seen as Native courts, authorities as well as treasuries. These identifiable courts went from 23 in 1923 all the way up to 80 in 1938. The small divisions were done very rapidly.

In the 1940’s the Southern Cameroon administration had made great advancements. In the year 1946 there were divisional representatives that had met and appointed two people that would represent the Southern Cameroons in the Eastern House of Assembly. This particular governmental structure was set in Nigeria. In time delegates demanded that the area of the Southern Cameroons receive regional status from the Nigerian Eastern House. The Southern Cameroons was run on native administration as well as a local public affairs type structure.

In time the native structure was phased out but the administration type divisions remained in place. Since these divisions stayed in place the Southern Cameroons were divided even further into more granular type divisions in the specified areas. This allowed for certain areas to marry into the La Republique du Cameroon.

The governmental structure of an area is in effect to keep order and keep society structured as a whole. Going through changes in power and structure is inevitable as a city, state or even country evolve. Evolution of government is natural as the needs of the area change.
