Meeting girlfriend parents for the first time is never an easy thing. I think no matter how nice of people they are, there is always that stigma or stereotype that is there that makes you very nervous about meeting them. My girlfriend’s father is a Brooklyn bankruptcy attorney, and her mom owns her own flower shop. They came to Chicago to visit my girlfriend Jen a couple of weeks ago, and Jen made dinner reservations for us all so I could meet them. I was very nervous the whole day leading up to it. I could not even decide what I wanted to wear, which is not something I usually worry about. Jen had to pick something out for me. I think I was nervous because they are both very successful people, and I am a struggling writer. I was afraid they would think I was not good enough for their daughter. It turns out they could not be nicer people. They really made me feel comfortable, and they seemed quite interested about my writing. It turns out her father is almost as big of a music fan as I am. We really spent most of the dinner talking about music, which made me feel more relaxed.
